Interview with.... Rothschild

Yorkshire 4-piece ‘Rothschild’ have recently released their highly anticipated debut EP ‘Broken Man’. Written and recorded pre-pandemic at West Homesick Recording Studio.

The 6-track EP draws elements from alt-rock, math rock, metal, emo and post-hardcore. The result is a dynamic collection of tracks that touch on themes as varied as heartache and politics to morality and individuality while providing a diverse soundscape blending impactful riffs and anthemic choruses with often delicate and gentle interludes.

We recently caught up with Danny from the band for a chat about the EP and their writing process.

Introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band?

Hi, my name’s Danny and I’m the Guitar player of Rothschild

Tell us a little about your band, how you got together and the story behind the name if there is one.

We’re sort of an alt-rocky kind of thing, we try to blend influences from both heavy, punky stuff and anything else we enjoy listening to! Me and Nathan (the vocalist) have been friends since we were kids and have pretty much always been in a band together since we were 16, so when we met Josh and Tom it seemed like a great idea to form Rothschild! There’s not really a story behind the name, I just thought it had a nice ring to it honestly!

Tell us a bit about your EP, is there a message in it, how was it recorded? How long were you working on it?

We’ve been working on Broken Man for a long long time now, we’ve recorded it twice as we weren’t happy with the first version but I have to say I love how it’s turned out. In terms of the messages in the EP, i think it’s mostly a reaction to a few things that were happening in our early 20s, both politically and in our personal lives. The energy of the songs are quite important to us personally, so playing them live is a really cathartic experience for us.

What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?

A typical songwriting process for us is one of us coming in with a bunch of crazy ideas that form the bare bones of a song, and then the rest of the band will help to add/change/remove parts over time until it sounds more like an actual piece of music! We try to allow for a certain amount of self-indulgence within our writing, which I think definitely comes across on this record, but we have had to learn to reign ourselves in sometimes otherwise all the songs would be a bit too crazy I think!

What bands were you listening to when you were writing this? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?

We took inspiration from a whole bunch of artists that we found really exciting, bands like Biffy, Arcane Roots, Black Peaks, Marmozets, Letlive, Dillinger esc plan etc… but weirdly enough we took inspiration from some less heavy stuff like Radiohead, Muse, Foals, all kinds of stuff really! I’d like to think we took our favourite parts of these bands and put them together to make something unique, hopefully, people will enjoy whatever that is!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I think people would be surprised to know that Danny used to be the drummer and Nathan used to play the guitar and sing before we met Tom and Josh!

Do you have any shows coming up that we should get ourselves along to?

We have a couple of cool shows coming up, Corporation in Sheffield on 27th of june and Percys in Whitchurch on the 30th of June!

Thanks for chatting with us Danny, it's been a pleasure!
