Otherworldly Entity is a numetal/alt rock band from Syracuse, NY that was formed in 2019.
We had a quick chat with singer John!
Introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band?
My name is John Harris and I'm the singer of Otherworldly Entity
Tell us a little about your band, how you got together and the story behind the name if there is one.
We are a numetal/alt rock band out of Central NY. Zlatko and I met a few years ago doing acoustic shows and open mic nights, and we started playing heavier music together in support of my solo album at the time. Shawn joined the band last year, and he's been a great addition. Otherworldly Entity is a reference to my background as a Paranormal Investigator, where I've search for Otherworldly Entities in over 400 investigations.
Tell us a bit about your latest single, what’s the story behind the song?
We released our song Sin a few months ago, which is a song about falling in love but knowing that it can't work in the long run. We released our new EP called Psilocyborg on February 23, 2023,
What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?
We don't really have a process. Sometimes we start with one line of lyrics, or a guitar riff. With Shawn in the band, sometimes we start with a drum line. We really try to be organic, so whatever starts the creativity at the time is what we go with.
What bands were you listening to when you were writing this release? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?
We all have such a diverse taste in music. Shawn's background is more metal, my background is more alternative rock, Zlatko is all over the place. I think it all has an influence on us, but that's the great thing about numetal: it can have so many different styles encapsulated in it. I know I tend to be inspired by bands like Seether, Blue October, and Cold, but I also listened to a lot of Ice Nine Kills. I think there's a little bit of everything on this new EP coming from all of our ranging backgrounds.
You have a music video to go along with this single, what is the story behind that, was it fun to make?
We did a really fun music video for Sin. It's about our star, Mo Page, opening a portal and all of these creatures pouring out. We shot it in a really remote forest where we flooded the forest with black lights and craziness. There was a lot of logistics to pulling it off, but we're so proud of the results.
What can you tell us about the album that the song has come from?
Psilocyborg is really dynamic emotionally. It can make you laugh and cry. That's something that's really important to us. It's not just heaviness, not just anger, not just negativity. We want people to FEEL
What would people be surprised to know about you?
We do everything ourselves. The music videos, the artwork, the lighting, recording, everything. We really like being involved in every aspect of our process.
