Interview with..... Molly Baker

We're huge fans of Molly Baker here and loved her last single. The Washington native has recently released her new single 'Stunt Double', we had a chat with the young rocker about the release.

Hi Molly, lovely to chat to you!

Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you.

I’m a singer-songwriter based in DC, who couldn’t survive without music. I’m always singing around the house, I have a billion Spotify playlists for every emotion imaginable, and I’m currently learning my own music style by releasing songs. I’m a very open and bubbly person!

Tell us a little about how long you've been performing and when you knew music was what you wanted to do.

I started singing when I was ten, and have worked with many producers, songwriters, and other people in the industry who led me to the people I created my debut album with. I started performing when I was around ten-eleven. I think music is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I haven’t looked back since I started!

Tell us a bit about your latest single, what’s the story behind the song?

This was the last of the 8 songs myself and Jenni co-wrote for the album. It’s about feeling like someone else’s punching bag, or being the person someone you know takes their anger out on. I feel like everyone’s been in that spot and it’s a very confusing place to be in. Me and Jenni thought it would be interesting to write about! I’ll be releasing our writing sessions on my insta, @mollybakermusic.

What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?

I can explain it in phases- usually, I’d set a timer for 3 minutes and ramble about what’s happening in my life, in my friends’ lives, about the plot of a book or movie I was reading. Jenni would usually write down anything interesting I said, any emotional words, imagery phrases… and we’d figure out almost a “plot” of the song. That includes figuring out what we wanted to say in the first verse, the pre-chorus, the second verse, the bridge, etc so we’d have enough time for all our ideas. Sometimes we even made charts! Then we’d just brain-dump words that related to the story. We’d look for the most amount of words that rhymed and start with that rhyme scheme. Lyrics, then melody, then harmonies, and the song was done!

What bands were you listening to when you were writing this release? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?

When the instrumental was made, I was listening to a lot of pop/rock artists, one that stands out to me is the Arctic Monkeys. While writing I was listening to a LOT of Taylor Swift, Midnights had just released and I looooved the album. I don’t think it had a major effect on THIS song, but she’s definitely influenced some of my unreleased songs lyrically.

What can you tell us about the release that the song has come from? Is it from an album/EP or is it a stand-alone release?

It’s the second single from my debut album “Plot Twist”. The first single, Beautiful Chaos, released in late March!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

This isn’t music related, but I can definitely say that I live up to my last name haha! I looooove to cook/bake, there are some days when I’ll spend every moment I have cooking different meals or desserts. It’s therapeutic to me, and of course, I love being able to eat what I made afterwards!!

Do you have any shows coming up that we should get ourselves along to?

I have a couple of small gigs in DC planned out for the next few months, but sadly, because I’m young in the industry I don’t have any major concerts / shows people could get tickets for. That’s a dream though.

Thanks for chatting with us Molly, we're really excited to hear the rest of the album.
