Canadas LØVE OUTLIER has recently released new single 'Alligator'
The band is a project born out of yearning for understanding, mental health and life's ups and downs told by songwriter Luke Bodi.
We recently chatted with Luke about the release and the band.
Hi Luke, thanks for chatting to us today!
Introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band?
Hey I'm Luke Bodi and I am the songwriter in LØVE OUTLIER I play drums and sing during performances but mainly write on guitar.
Tell us a little about your band, how you got together and the story behind the name if there is one.
LØVE OUTLIER started as a songwriting project in covid which stringed together melodies and wanted to tell my life story through songs. I am primarily a drummer but discovered my voice through cathartic singing in the shower and playing chords on my acoustic guitar. the songs i am releasing including alligator were produced by Mike Battle who i shared my demos to during the end of the pandemic. He is the big reason why these songs are how they are sonically and i am very grateful to work with a rad guy like him. The live band consists of my friends Jared Wegenast who plays Bass and my friend Paul Shenton who plays guitar. I play drums and sing lead vocals. LØVE OUTLIER means to stand outside of the circle normal society and one who lives with unconditional love.
Tell us a bit about your latest single, what’s the story behind the song?
ALLIGATOR is a love song about about my first relationship and letting go and moving forward. it touches on my internal dialogue which I had surrounding the relationship and feeling stuck in a memory. The first one cuts deep.
What is your writing process like? Do you start with lyrics and then come up with a melody or is it the other way round?
My writing process comes from a lot of improvisation with lyrics that I come up with on the spot with voice memos. I sing melodies over chords till its stuck in my head and makes me feel something good. I write from emotion not from a technical point of view.
What bands were you listening to when you were writing this release? Do you think it had an effect on the end sound?
I was listening to Hot Mulligan a lot and Lil Peep and other emo artists during the writing period. I think my inner child love of blink-182 came through pretty strong with my vocals in the verses and I was paying tribute lyrically if you catch that in the song.
What can you tell us about the release that the song has come from?
ALLIGATOR is part of an EP called Meditation for the Punk at Heart. ill be dropping that in the fall. it's a collection of songs about my life and mental health.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I've been playing live since I was 10 and have played a lot of festivals and in many bands as a drummer but this project is the first time I've ever done vocals. it's a brand new chapter and I'm loving it.
Do you have any shows coming up that we should get ourselves along to?
I am in the process of booking more shows locally in Victoria BC Canada. starting slow and growing the online presence. looking forward to branching out and playing off the island and touring eventually.
